Hammers’ Midfield Search Continues as £47m Star Commits to Bundesliga Giants
West Ham United’s hopes of signing João Palhinha this summer have been dealt a blow after the Bayern Munich midfielder publicly declared his desire to stay in Germany—despite a frustrating debut season.
The 29-year-old Portuguese enforcer, who joined Bayern from Fulham for £47m last summer, has struggled for consistent minutes under Thomas Tuchel and new boss Vincent Kompany. But in a defiant message to potential suitors, Palhinha insists he’s ready to fight for his place.

Despite limited playing time, the midfielder dismissed speculation about a quick exit:
“It wasn’t easy. My injury didn’t help, and when I came back, Leon Goretzka was playing well. But I want to stay. Why not? I’m at one of the best clubs in the world.”
“Just because my first year was tough doesn’t mean I want to leave. It only makes me more determined to prove myself.”
His comments come after Bild’s Christian Falk reported that West Ham had enquired about his availability last month. However, with Palhinha seemingly committed to Bayern, the Hammers will need to look elsewhere.
With Graham Potter keen to revamp his engine room, several other names have emerged as targets:
• James McAtee (Man City) – A creative spark, but faces competition from multiple clubs.
• Chris Rigg (Sunderland) – The 17-year-old wonderkid is highly rated.
• Arthur Avom (Lorient) – A physical, box-to-box option.
• Angel Gomes (Lille) – Former Man Utd talent now shining in Ligue 1.
Palhinha’s decision makes sense for several reasons:
• Bayern’s midfield shuffle: With Joshua Kimmich’s future uncertain, Palhinha could yet earn a bigger role under Kompany.
• No rush to leave: At 29, he’s in his prime and wants to succeed at an elite club.
• West Ham’s project still developing: While the Hammers offer Premier League football, they can’t yet match Bayern’s stature.
• West Ham must pivot quickly – With Palhinha off the table, Potter will accelerate talks for other targets.
• Bayern’s plans: If Kimmich departs, Palhinha could finally get his chance as a regular starter.
• Summer domino effect: The Hammers’ next move could trigger a midfield merry-go-round.
Palhinha’s stance is a setback for West Ham, but the transfer market remains wide open. One thing’s clear: the midfield reshuffle at London Stadium is only just beginning.
