Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has sparked a reaction that Arsenal’s Declan Rice should have won Premier League player of the season ahead of Phil Foden. Despite Foden impressive performances this season he believes Declan Rice has had a more significant impact on his team.
“Declan Rice has taken Arsenal to another level,” Merson said. “I think Phil Foden has not taken them to another level… I think he has been good, but Rice has taken his team to that other level, he’s just nearly got them to Manchester City level.”
Paul Merson praised Declan Rice’s consistency for the whole season, he said; “he is being rated atleast seven or eight out of ten in every game”. Statistics show that Arsenal has only made small improvements this season, earning five more points than last season and losing fewer games.

On the other hand, Phil Foden’s form for Manchester City has been remarkable, with 19 Premier League goals and eight assists. He’s made important contributions, including hat-tricks and important braces, which have helped City winning the title.
While Merson opinion sparks an interesting debate, the numbers suggest Foden’s impact has been significant. Nevertheless, Rice’s consistent performances have undoubtedly been vital for Arsenal’s success.
